Ikpishuona Festival Of The Okpameri People

IKPISHUONA FESTIVAL OF THE OKPAMERI PEOPLE

By Sheriff Dada

Okpameri is a nation in the Afemai Region of Edo State, Nigeria. The Okpameri nation comprises communities of Osi-Aiyegunle, Bekuma, Damgbala, Ekor, Ekpe, Ekpesa, Eshawa, Ibillo, Ikiran-lle, Ikiran-Oke, Imoga, Lampese, Makeke, Ogugu, Ogbe, Ojah, Ojirami, Oyanubuza, Somorika, Ugboshi-Afe, Ugbosi-Ele, and Unumu.

The Ikpishuona festival displays the rich cultural heritage of the Okpameri people. It is a unique cultural event that brings together people from different parts of Nigeria and beyond to witness the masquerade display, which is the festival’s highlight. Traditionally, the festival was to be celebrated every seven years, as the name, Ikpishuona, literally means seven years.

The Okpameri people are known for their unique masquerade culture, passed down from generation to generation. The masquerades are believed to represent ancestral spirits that protect and guide the community. During the Ikpishuona festival, these masquerades come out in full regalia, dancing and performing to the delight of onlookers.

Dog meats, Ilazor, pounded yams, melon soups, palm wine, and other drinks are delicacies that float around whenever an Okpameri community celebrates Ikpishuona.

Have an Okpameri friend? You will never find a festival like the Ikpishuona festival anywhere in the world.
